About Virtual Colonoscopy

Virtual Colonoscopy, or Computed Tomography (CT) Colonography as it is technically referred to, is an advanced type of x-ray exam that is used to obtain three-dimensional images of the colon. This new minimally invasive test can identify abnormalities without the invasive techniques and sedation required during a conventional colonoscopy.

The procedure is used to diagnose colon and bowel disease, including polyps, diverticulitis and cancer. A colon polyp is a fleshy growth occurring on the lining of the colon or rectum. Untreated colorectal polyps can develop into colorectal cancer. Early detection and removal can prevent cancer from developing.

Virtual Colonoscopy is a new, minimally invasive imaging technique that may help alleviate a patient’s embarrassment and facilitate this important health screening.

Screening allows your provider to find and remove polyps before they may become cancerousAdvantages of Virtual Colonoscopy

  • Less invasive than standard colonoscopy.
  • Decreased risk of perforating the colon.
  • Provides clearer, more detailed images than a conventional x-ray using a barium enema, sometimes called a lower gastrointestinal (GI) series.
  • Reduced scan and recovery time compared to a conventional colonoscopy or a GI series.
  • Ability to show abnormalities outside the colon, which would otherwise be missed.
  • No sedation required.
  • Ideal for patients with increased risk of complications or elderly patients who cannot tolerate a standard colonoscopy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I prepare for a Virtual Colonoscopy?

The preparation for a virtual colonoscopy is the same as for a conventional colonoscopy and requires the bowel to be cleansed before the screening. A cleansing kit and detailed instructions are provided to ensure optimal results.

Is this procedure covered by my insurance?

Virtual colonoscopy as a screening method is currently not covered by Medicare. However, Medicare and some private pay insurance providers cover this procedure for patients with failed or incomplete standard colonoscopies, who are on anticoagulation therapy, or are unable to tolerate anesthesia. Your insurance may also cover this procedure if it is ordered for diagnostic purposes instead of as a standard screening procedure.

What if polyps are found?

If polyps are found your provider will refer you to for a traditional colonoscopy and biopsy of the polyps.
